Extending the knowledge of the regional Earth system in the Baltic Sea region
Baltic Earth strives to achieve an improved Earth System understanding of the Baltic Sea region as the basis for science-based management in the face of climatic, environmental and human impact in the region. Baltic Earth brings together a broad international research community around core scientific issues identified as fundamental to informing societal efforts to achieve sustainability in the region. These “Grand Challenges” are tackled through joint research efforts, workshops, conferences and capacity building events accompanied by a continuous process of synthesis of the current state of knowledge. Communication with stakeholders and research funders aims to ensure impact and relevance of the research. Baltic Earth targets the atmosphere, land and marine environment of the Baltic Sea, its drainage basin and nearby areas with relevance for the Baltic Sea region. Background

Baltic Earth Assessment Reports with BACC III now in the making
One of the goals of Baltic Earth when it inherited BALTEX, was the assessment of the current state of the science in different research fields in the Baltic Earth context, similar to the BACC approach for climate change. Now, 6 years after the establishment of Baltic Earth, and 2 international conferences, 23 workshops/seminars/sessions and 5 summer schools later, a series of extensive assessment reports, called BEAR (Baltic Earth Assessment Reports), is underway. For each of the Baltic Earth Grand Challenges, a team of experts from the Baltic Earth network is now collecting information and reading publications to wrap together the current state of knowledge in the respective research fields, including uncertainties and gaps in knowledge.
A special case of the BEAR reports is the assessment of regional climate change and its impacts. This report will be the update to BACC II, which had been published as a book in 2015. The upcoming BACC III report will add new knowledge and possibly challenge old knowledge, while summarizing but not repeating the valid information from BACC II.
As for the previous two BACC books, there will be a close collaboration with HELCOM, the intergovernmental organization for the protection of the marine environment of the Baltic Sea. HELCOM will in the future more strongly integrate climate change aspects into their work, e.g. into the update of the HELCOM Baltic Sea Action Plan. Moreover, HELCOM plans to publish recapitulatory, easily accessible climate “fact sheets” for practitioners, decision makers and the public, which shall be based on the BACC III and BACC II material. Baltic Earth scientists will also be part of an expert network on climate (EN Clime) which will look over the sound scientific statements of the fact sheets.
The peer reviewed BEAR reports are expected to be published sometime in 2020, as a special issue in an Open Access scientific journal. More... |
