The coasts of North Sea and Baltic Sea under climate change

On October 11/12, 2016, the 15th German-Polish Seminar on Coastal Research was held at the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg. The general topic „The coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea under climate change – synthesis of German and Polish strategies for development and prediction“ was divided into 3 sessions: „Influence of climate change from the Northwest European Shelf“, „Local manifestations of climate change in the North Sea and in the Baltic Sea“, „Societal response“.

There have been 27 participants in total, 11 from Poland, 1 from China, 15 from Germany. The meeting has been sponsored by the Excellence Cluster „Integrated Climate System Analysis and Prediction (CliSAP)“ oft he University of Hamburg. Contributions covered the topical spectrum from embedding the considered coastal region North Sea/Baltic Sea into global climate dynamics to local recording of changing hydrographic parameters and respective socio-economic protection/adaptation strategies. A fruitful synthesis of the actual state of knowledge and paradigms has been achieved by the somewhat representative participation of concerned research and administrative institutions on the German and the Polish side. This has been complemented by including first-time Chinese approaches and experiences. Summarizing it can be stated that there is a strong common sense for investigating and developing coastal areas under the impact of global change This should be further cultivated facing future challenges.

This series of Seminars was initiated by Prof. Jürgen Sündermann from the Institute of Oceanography, University of Hamburg, and Prof. Piotr Wilde, Institute of Hydroengineering oft he Polish Academy of Sciences Gdansk, in 1979, when they established a German-Polish cooperation on coastal dynamics under the auspices of the German Research Foundation and the Polish Academy of Sciences. Step by step on both sides further interested partners habe been incorporated forming a platform for communication and coordination in coastal research with a focus on the Southern Baltic Sea. Among them are the Universities of Kiel, Hannover, Greifswald, Szczecin and Gdansk, the Helmholtz Center Geesthacht, the Institute of Baltic Research Warnemünde. The joint work turned out to be very fruitful, both with respect to the scientific achievements and the human understanding. It stabilized bilateral relations during the eighties and inspired European projects from the nineties. So far the following meetings have been held: 1982 Hamburg, 1985 Gdansk, 1988 Hannover, 1991 Sopot, 1993 Vilm, 1995 Swinoujscie, 1997 Ueckermünde, 2000 Starbienino, 2003 Ratzeburg, 2007 Gdansk, 2008 Gdansk, 2011 Swinoujscie, 2012 Greifswald, 2014 Sopot, 2016 Hamburg. The next Seminar is planned for 2018 in Szczecin.
